fortiss has appointed three new research fellows: Prof. Ute Schmid (Bamberg University), Prof. Birte Glimm (Ulm University) and Dr. Christian Winkler (Siemens Corporate Technology). These three scientists will take part in the institute’s research activities and help further advance the transfer of research results to industry and society. Within the fortiss Board of Directors, Prof. Alexander Pretschner (TU Munich) has taken over the post of spokesperson previously held by Prof. Helmut Krcmar (TU Munich).
The fortiss research fellow program offers outstanding academic and industry researchers the opportunity to actively share their research expertise with fortiss. The program is focused on bringing fortiss-developed technologies and prototypes to the market and shaping the activities of stand-alone research groups at fortiss into an industry-relevant topic.
These new appointments will join current research fellows Prof. Heinrich Hußmann (LMU) and Prof. Uwe Baumgarten (TU Munich), bringing the total number to five.
The new research fellows
Prof. Ute Schmid teaches artificial intelligence and machine learning at Bamberg University. Her research activities are focused on inductive programming, interpretable and human-level machine learning and the generation of explanations for learned models. Prof. Schmid will be engaged in the flagship project “Robust AI”, as well as in the IBM fortiss Center for AI.
Prof. Birte Glimm is a computer scientist at the Institute for Artificial Intelligence at Ulm University. Her research primarily involves developing and optimizing algorithms for automated reasoning in expressive description and for answering knowledge-based queries, with a focus on adequately explaining automatically-derived conclusions to users. Prof. Glimm will also be engaged in the flagship project “Robust AI” and will collaborate with the Robotics, Business Model Engineering and Model-based Software Engineering groups.
Dr. Christian Winkler is Senior Principal Expert for “Networks and Communication” at Siemens Corporate Technology. He also heads the “Internet of Things” (IoT) research group. These activities focus on demanding industrial solutions and (critical) infrastructures. Dr. Winkler will support fortiss in developing the Industrial IoT field of competence, developing the research topics and embedding them in a local research and industrial environment.
fortiss Board of Directors
Prof. Alexander Pretschner (TU Munich) has taken over as spokesperson within the two-person scientific Board of Directors at fortiss. The previous spokesperson, Prof. Helmut Krcmar (TU Munich), will continue to serve on the board.
