Professor Baumgarten (*1955) focused his research on mobile distributed systems, with a particular emphasis on operating systems for embedded, mobile, and web-based applications. Another key area of his work was wireless communication between computing systems and the quality of the services built upon it.

After studying computer science and earning his doctorate at the University of Bonn, Professor Baumgarten completed his habilitation in Oldenburg and was appointed as a professor of computer science at TUM in 1995. In addition to his research, he was deeply committed to teaching and improving study conditions. He served as the first dean of studies in computer science and played a key role in implementing the Bologna Process. From the summer semester of 2010 onward, he also served as TUM’s data protection officer and was a long-standing member of the supervisory board of Miray Software AG. Since 2021, Professor Baumgarten has been retired.

Prof. Baumgarten was appointed data privacy representative at TUM in the summer semester of 2010. He has also served on the Supervisory Board of Miray Software AG for several years.

Prof. Baumgarten has been a research fellow at fortiss since October 2016. He primarily supports the Architectures and Services for Critical Infrastructures and Model-based Systems Engineering departments with individual topics.
