Digitally connecting Europe
The Internet of Things (IoT) represents a significant step towards the digitalization of our society and economy, in which people and objects are easily connected via communications networks and beneficial data can be exchanged. For this reason the European Commission is working on the next generation of the Internet of Things (NGIoT) together with industry, public organizations and research institutes in order to unleash the potential of the IoT technologies specifically for EU member states.
The European project EU-IoT acts as an accelerator for the entire European IoT ecosystem, steering the focus toward the development and introduction of a trustworthy, sustainable, secure and protected Internet of Things that will benefit European society, its economy and its industry.
EU-IoT is pursing the goal of transforming the current community of European researchers into an increasingly connected, dynamic, participatory and sustainable ecosystem that will be a vital element of the next generation of the Internet.
fortiss is coordinating the work package 3 activities (Catalyst) with the aim of better connecting the entire IoT community within projects, as well as researchers, open source initiatives and standards development organizations. The institute is pursuing concrete measures such as conducting EU-IoT ideathons/hackathons or IoT training programs, organizing workshops between projects and SDOs and is establishing the connection to research institutes that have their focus on IoT and edge computing. fortiss is also integrating numerous EU-IoT experts and enabling the targeted connectivity to projects and related initiatives such as GAIA-X, AIOTI and Open DEI.
EU-IoT offers a collaborative framework, including content, tools and processes, in order to integrate researchers, developers, integrators and users into the EU. This common framework will overcome the current fragmentation, enable a strong European IoT-supported economy as the core building block of the digital single EU market and drive the expansion and reinforcement of Europe’s IoT research and innovation capacity.
EU-IoT covers the end-to-end vision of an intelligent Internet of Things by encompassing a wide range of application scenarios and technical aspects from the areas of human-centric interfaces, deep and near edge systems, infrastructure and data spaces.
The project is a cooperation and support campaign within the Horizon 2020 program that promotes the development of synergies and the strategic coordination between NGIoT projects and connects related initiatives and key international experts.
With its scientific expertise, fortiss is making a significant contribution to a common European IoT vision that focuses especially on sustainable goals. The institute supports the IoT community by bringing its experience and vision to the decentralized smart edge systems and emphasizing the relevance of open source, programmable IoT systems (network and computer architectures).
The fortiss scientists are following an ambitious plan to further increase the value chain contribution of open source IoT solutions and to provide the common development and availability of relevant IoT expertise for various interest groups, including small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs).
IoT measures (research and innovation action RIAs) will be coordinated between the research and development areas and with the development of standards. By using this approach, research institutes should be taken into account even more when open source initiatives and standardization measures are involved.
MARTEL Innovate is leading and coordinating the EU-IoT consortium and is lending its support with its know-how and many years of experience in managing and promoting international research and innovation projects with a focus on next generation Internet and technologies such as IoT, cloud networks and 5G.
Aarhus University in Denmark is contributing to the project with the interdisciplinary Center for Digital Business Development, which is integrated into the department for enterprise development and technology at the School for Economic and Social Sciences. The center is overseeing the EU-IOT COACH work plan (WP) and is responsible for the success stories, best practice application scenarios, business models and for driving the project forward.
Spanish innovation agency Blue Specs is providing strategic and hands-on support in the areas of technology introduction, stakeholder management, SME growth, politics and expertise development for public and private organizations. Blu Specs is overseeing WP2, which focuses on the integration of important stakeholders, the development of input frameworks, the management of expert contributions and the determination of priorities and challenges related to NGIOT.
INTRASOFT International S.A. (Luxemburg) is a leading European IT solutions and service provider with a strong international presence. The company works for public and private organizations. INTRASOFT is overseeing the IoT training programs and expertise development activities and provides key contributions to the development of business models and the implementation of the project’s communications and standardization strategies.
